Keeping children safe in the home

Upon becoming a parent most people will do anything they can to keep their child safe. Among other things this is illustrated in the diligence parents have in using car seats and in placing their children on their backs to sleep. As children grow, the dangers change somewhat. In this post we will cover some of the things parents and caregivers should be aware of to keep children safe.

To prevent children from ingesting things that could harm them it is important to identify these objects and keep them out of reach. Brightly colored laundry detergent pods that contain harmful elements may be confused as candy but in reality can make children sick. Similarly, coin shaped “button” batteries that are used in some electronic toys could burn children if they swallow them.

Steps to prevent the fall of children or heavy objects should be taken. If something a child can climb on is placed next to an open window it is possible a child could fall out leading to serious injuries. Heavy furniture such as dressers should be secured to the wall so if a child tries to climb it, it does not crush them.

To reduce the risk of strangulation cords should be kept out of reach. This includes not only electronic cords but cords that may be found on window shades or blinds.

Some injuries children suffer in the home are the result of defects in products found there. When that happens it may be possible to take legal action against the party responsible for the defect. An attorney who is knowledgeable about these types of cases can be of assistance.
